The First Step
In the year 1982, the first inaugural flight of Air Lanka was launched. In the year 1998, Emirates poured in an investment of worth US $70 million purchasing a 40% stake in the Airline Company. This was the time when the Sri Lankan Government and Emirates collaborated on a decade long strategic partnership to work together. With this investment, the worldwide reputation and up-gradation of Air Lanka was taken care of. History of Sri Lankan Airlines
Sri Lankan Airlines was started with the name of Air Lanka. Their first journey happened in the year 1982 with Lockheed L1011-500 which flew from Amsterdam to Colombo. It was the flag carrier of the Government of Sri Lanka after Air Ceylon was shut down due to bankruptcy. In the year 1980, Air Lanka leased three airplanes to commence its operation. One Boeing 707 from Singapore Airlines and Maersk Air. However, the Boeing 707 from Maersk Air was replaced with the same model from Royal Brunei. However, wide-body operations started with a Lockheed L1011-1 Tristar leased from Air Canada.
In the year 1982, Air Lanka took over three Lockheed L1011-1 Tristar airplanes. Amongst which two of them were from All Nippon Airways one from Air Canada was leased. In 1984 the airlines purchased its first Boeing 747-200B "King Vijaya", which was used in operations around Europe and Southeast Asia. With time, the regional markets for the airlines increased. Operations started becoming more and more predominant in the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East. However, in 2008, the contract between Emirates and Sri Lankan Government came to an end and was not renewed.

For hand luggage, the maximum weight allowed for Business Class and Economy classes is 7kg with a maximum of 2 pieces and 7kg with a maximum 1 piece.
