Indira Gandhi International Airport

Delhi Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the major international airport serving the Indian capital of New Delhi. It is named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who died in 1984.

The airport serves as the main hub for Air India and Alliance Air, both domestic airlines based out of Delhi. Other carriers include GoAir, SpiceJet, Jet Airways, Vistara, Kingfisher Airlines, UTair, AirAsia India, Indigo, Thai Smile, Gulf Aviation, Careem, Zoomcar, Uber, and Ola.

In 2011, Delhi became the world's second airport to receive the Green Globe Award for being the best airport in the Asia Pacific region for environmental sustainability. In 2012, it received the World Travel Awards' prestigious "Best Airport in South East Asia" award.

The airport covers an area of 543 hectares. Its runway length is 3,500 m, making it capable of handling widebody aircraft such as Boeing 747, Airbus A380, and ATR 72.

There are three terminals at IGIA: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 is the largest terminal and handles almost half of the total passengers. Terminal 2 handles flights to smaller cities like Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata, Amritsar, Pune, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Cochin, Trivandrum, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mangalore, Ranchi, Shillong, Imphal, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Katra, Shimla, Jalpaiguri, Allahabad, Patna, Varanasi, etc., while Terminal 3 handles flights to small towns like Ambala, Bhopal, Gaya, Raipur, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Gorakhpur, etc.

Terminal 1 has been expanded several times since its opening in 1976. The latest expansion took place in 2016, adding another floor to allow room for additional check-in counters.

Floor space in Terminals 1 & 2 has increased over the years, allowing for more check-in counters and baggage carousels. However, there are still many areas where you cannot find a counter or a baggage claim.

Terminal 3 has no expansion planned due to security concerns.
