It's been the national airline and flag carrier of Colombia since 5 December 1919, as it was initially registered under the title SCADTA. It's headquartered in Bogotá, D.C. using its main hub in El Dorado International Airport. Avianca is the flagship of a group of eight Latin American airlines, whose operations are combined to serve as a single airline using a code-sharing system.

Through SCADTA, Avianca is the world's second-oldest airline after KLM, also celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2009, when it was announced that it would unite with TACA. It became an official member of Star Alliance on 21 June 2012, after a procedure that lasted about 18 months from the initial announcement of its own invitation to join the Alliance.

Carry-On Baggage
Avianca Airline passengers are permitted to bring on-board the aircraft one piece of cabin baggage, plus one personal item, such as a briefcase, camera bag or small backpack. Your carry-on baggage should fit into the Avianca Airline overhead bins or under the seat in front of you.
Carry-on baggage cannot exceed 114 centimetres in combined width, length and height; this includes any wheels and handles– with the exception of some of the musical instruments that fit in the Avianca Airline overhead compartment space or under-seat space available at the time of boarding.
