It was established in November 1946 with the name of South West Air Transport (SWAT). Initially, they used Ryan Navion for linking Wildhoek and Grootfontein. By the end of 1958, they had a fleet of 7 Ryan Navions alongside a De Havilland Dragon Rapide. For a very long period, the South African government had been a major shareholder of Air Namibia but currently, it is fully owned by the Namibia government.

There are mainly four classes available in Air Namibia flights.
