Air Blatic was established on 28th August 1995, as the result of a venture between the Latvian State and Scandinavian Airlines, with operations starting on October 1st, 1995 using a Saab 340. Air Botswana became a joint stock company in 1999, previously being a limited liability company, having all of their Saab 340s replaced with Fokker 50s. Martin Gauss became the CEO in 2011, replacing long term president Flick after a period of total loss.

Air Botswana Limited was established on 2nd July 1972, in place of the two previous failed airlines, with Air Botswana Holdings being responsible for the leasing and ownership of aircraft. Actual flight operations began on 1st August 1972, using a Fokker F-27 Friendship. By the end of 1986, the route network of the airline included destinations such as Francistown, Harare, Johannesburg, Victoria Falls and others. The government began privatization efforts in 2000 to turn the airline into a profitable business.
