Air Austral History

Air Austral was founded by Gerard Etheve, a local businessman, all the way back in 1974, and became Reunion’s first airline, being known as Reunion Air Services. The airline was purchased by Sematra, a local company in October 1990, having its name changed from Air Reunion to Air Austral, getting its first Boeing 737 three months later.Air Austral launched its first long haul service in 2003, between Reunion and Paris, later going on to establish two more long haul routes. Gerard Ethieve, founder and chief executive, was replaced by Marie-Joseph Male in 2012, a decision which has since then returned the company to profit.
